UTSA men’s relay squads highlight day three of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - Less than 24 hours after the UTSA men’s 4x800-meter relay team broke a school record, the men’s 4x100m relay punched its ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional and the 4x400m relay team advanced to Saturday’s final to highlight day three action for the Roadrunners at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

In late Thusday action, the 4x800m foursome of junior Justin Pitchford, freshman Eric Miller, sophomore Larry Brooks and freshman Brian Weirich broke the school record with a 7:34.60 clocking to finish eighth in a stacked field.

In Friday morning qualifying rounds, the 4x100m quartet of freshmen Cedric Harris and Steven Brown, junior T.R. Sissel and senior Curtis Johnson posted a regional qualifying 40.39 to finish fifth in their heat and 13th overall. That time is just off the school record of 40.27 set in 2001.

The 4x400m relay team of sophomore Scott Briscoe, Sissel, junior David Burnett and Brooks did advanced to the final with a season-best 3:10.18.

Sissel also assured his own spot in the regional meet with a qualifying time of 52.22 in the 400m hurdles prelims late Thursday. He won his heat and advanced to the final with the eighth-fastest time overall. Also on Thursday evening, freshman Jaziel Crisostomo clocked a 15:23.15 to place 10th in the 5,000m, the fastest time at UTSA in two years.

Junior Marques Mitchell just missed the regional standard with a season-best 14.38 to finish 20th in the 110m hurdles prelims Friday morning. Freshman Luke Johnson, the reigning Southland Conference Men’s Athlete of the Week, finished eighth in the “B” section of the shot put with a 52-2 3/4 measure.

On the women’s side, senior Rosalind Holmes raced to an 11.85 to finish second in her heat and 20th overall in the 100m prelims. She also ran on the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams that finished 27th (46.63) and 34th (3:47.49), respectively. Sophomore Lyndsey Sidney finished sixth in her heat of the 100m hurdles with a 14.59 clocking, while junior Demetria Holmes was fifth in her heat with a 14.66.

The Texas Relays continue Friday night-Saturday at Myers Stadium.
