| April 5, 2005 Angelo State rallies to hand Roadrunners 8-5 defeat Box Score The loss overshadowed a valiant pitching effort by sophomore Blake Brannon, who made his first start of the year and team-leading 19th appearance. He tossed eight innings and struck out a career high seven. After giving up two runs and three hits to the Rams (18-16) in the first inning, Brannon cruised through the next seven, allowing just one run and three hits. In the ninth, the Rams banged out five runs on four hits off UTSA relievers Dustin Thibodeaux and sophomore Steven Vasquez. Vasquez, making his first appearance of the year after injuries had sidelined him, surrendered a double that allowed the tying run to score. A fielding error on UTSA allowed the go-ahead run to trot home. Thibodeaux took the loss to fall to 0-1, while Ram reliever Ryan Mulle picked u the win out of the bullpen to improve to 5-1. Chris Reed notched his fourth save. After Angelo State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, the Roadrunners countered with two in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber led off the game with his second career home run, the first leadoff home run for UTSA since 1999. Two batters later, junior Lee Todesco cranked his third round-tripper of the season to left field to knot the game at two. The Rams pushed ahead 3-2 in the fourth, but the Roadrunners added another tally in the fourth as senior Eric Moreno reached on a error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Michael McKennon singled Moreno to third, and freshman Tyler Johnson got his third career RBI on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three. In the sixth, UTSA took a 4-3 lead as redshirt freshman Phillip Allen's RBI single plated Moreno, who had doubled earlier in the inning. The Roadrunners made it 5-3 in the seventh on Saltzgaber's RBI triple that scored freshman Joel Doucet with his first career run scored. Doucet, making his first career start in right field, led UTSA by going 2-for-5, his first career hits as well. Saltzgaber also notched two hits as UTSA had nine safeties. The Rams totaled 10 hits with Brad Hough, Kyle Mandelbaum and Daniel Ochs leading the way with two each. The Roadrunners hit the road for Thibodaux, La., this weekend as they face Nicholls State in a three-game Southland Conference series. -UTSA- |
