| April 1, 2005 UTSA takes first game of Sam Houston series, 5-2 Box Score The Roadrunners won for the 10th time in 14 games to improve to 11-17 overall and 5-2 in the Southland Conference, while Sam Houston State dropped its sixth straight game to fall to 9-18-1 and 2-5 in the SLC. Rodriguez went eight complete innings and struck out four to up his record to 3-3. Junior Jason Vecchio worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning for his fourth save. UTSA was held to just seven hits but got solo home runs from junior J.R. Voyles and Chris Lewis and a sacrifice fly and RBI ground out from Michael McKennnon. The Roadrunners also scored on a wild pitch. Defensively, the UTSA fielders helped their pitchers as they turned three double plays, including one to end the game. The Roadrunners notched solo runs in the first and second innings and then saw the homestanding BearKats score solos in the second and fourth to tie the game at two. In the first, senior Sean Danielson led off with a double down the right field line. He stole third, his ninth swipe of the year to lead the team, and then scored on McKennon's grounder to second. Voyles gave his team a 2-0 lead in the second on his team-leading fourth round-tipper of the year. Voyles' shot just slipped inside the left field foul pole. After the BearKats tied the game at two in the fifth, UTSA took a 3-2 lead in the fifth it never relinquished. Voyles, who was 3-for-3 on the day and now leads UTSA with a .356 batting average, led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. Sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber then sacrificed Voyles and senior Eric Moreno over. After Danielson was intentionally walked to load the bases, McKennon hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Voyles. UTSA made it 4-2 in the sixth inning as Lewis nailed his fourth home run over the left center field wall. Redshirt freshman Phillip Allen added the final run in the eighth on a wild pitch. Danielson was 2-for-4, while Sam Houston's Karl Krailo led the BearKats with a 3-for-4 day. The Roadrunners and BearKats will play game two in the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Holleman Field. -UTSA- |
