Roadrunners pound Texas-Pan American, 14-3

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunner baseball team pounded out a season high 21 hits, including 11 extra base hits and a season high four home runs, in handing the visiting Texas-Pan American Broncs a 14-3 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

Spotting the Broncs a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning, the Roadrunner bats broke out, pushing across two runs in the second, three in the third, two more in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh to improve to 10-17 on the year. UTPA fell to 9-21 as the Roadrunners, who have now won nine of the last 13 games, swept the mid-week two-game series from the Broncs.

Five Roadrunner batsmen posted three hits apiece as UTSA registered more than 20 hits for the first time since March 24, 2004 - ironically against Texas-Pan American on that date.

Junior Lee Todesco led the onslaught with a 3-for-4 day, including his second home run of the year, and a team-high four RBIs. Sophomore Michael McKennon went 3-for-4 with a home run and a team-high three runs scored, while junior Ryan Crew smashed his third round-tripper of the year and went 3-for-5. Senior Stephen Holdren stayed hot at the plate with a 3-for-6 afternoon, and sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber notched three hits in five trips to the plate. Junior J.R. Voyles went 2-for-4, hit a home run, and scored twice.

Four Roadrunner pitchers combined to allow just three runs on eight hits for the Broncs. Junior Caleb Barton (2-3) earned the win as the starter, going the first three. He fanned three batters as well. Junior Josh Ruffin tossed three innings, while sophomore Blake Brannon made his team-leading 17th appearance and threw the seventh and eighth innings. Freshman Brian Pope worked the ninth.

UTPA starter Kelly Casares surrendered five runs in just 2.1 innings for the loss to fall to 1-1.

Leading 5-1 in the fifth, the Roadrunners allowed one Bronce run to score. UTSA then tacked on two tallied in the fifth for a 7-2 lead and added three runs in the sixth for a 10-2. In the seventh, the Roadrunners almost hit for the cycle in scoring their final four runs. UTSA had a single by redshirt freshman Phillip Allen, a triple by Voyles and a two-run homer by Crew before the first out.

The Roadrunners will travel to Huntsville, Texas this weekend for a three-game Southland Conference series at Sam Houston State. The first game is Friday, April 1 at 2 p.m.
