SAN MARCOS – Three University of Texas at San Antonio baseball players hit their first career home runs Friday night and UTSA had a season high 17 hits, but it took a ninth inning sacrifice fly to seal an 11-10 Roadrunner win in the opening game of the three-game series with Texas State at Bobcat Field.
The Roadrunners improved to 7-16 and 3-1 in the Southland Conference with their third consecutive win. Texas State fell to 18-9 and 3-1 in the league.
Leading 10-7, UTSA saw Texas State notch three runs in the eighth to tie the game. In the ninth with Bobcat bullpen ace Scott Moore on the mound, senior Sean Danielson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Michael McKennon. Danielson scooted to third on a wild pitch and scored on junior Ryan Crew’s long fly out to center field.
Junior Jason Vecchio (1-3) recorded his first win of the season, coming in during the eighth inning and shutting down the Bobcat rally. Moore, who came into the game 4-0 with a 0.69 ERA, gave up the deciding run to drop his first game of the year.
Danielson, sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber and senior Stephen Holdren each hit their first career home runs.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 4-1 lead after four innings as they lit the scoreboard for two runs in both the first and second innings. But, the Roadrunners rebounded with a six-run fifth innings that allowed the Roadrunners to take an 8-4 lead.
In the fifth, UTSA exploded for six runs on six hits and were aided by two Texas State errors. Danielson led off the frame with his first career home run to pull the Roadrunners within two at 4-2.
Tyler Bryant then relieved Bobby Sawicki, but UTSA pounded out five runs off Bryant. Ryan Crew, Holdren, Eric Moreno, Chris Lewis and Lee Todesco all scored runs, while Moreno, Todesco and Danielson recorded singles and Lewis drilled his seventh double of the year.
After the Bobcats clawed back with three tallies in the sixth to make it 8-7, the Roadrunners answered with two more in the seventh as Saltzgaber smashed his first career round-tripper – a two-run homer – to left field to score Todesco, who had singled.
Todesco led the Roadrunners at the plate with a career high four hits in five trips to the plate. He walked in his other appearance. Lewis was 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Danielson registered three hits as well.
The teams will play the second game of the series tomorrow at Roadrunner Field at 2 p.m. -UTSA-
