Rally falls short in 14-12 extra-inning setback to Louisiana-Monroe

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Trailing 11-1 in the sixth inning Friday to Louisiana-Monroe, The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team rallied all the way back to tie the game at 12 in the ninth, but the visiting Indians pushed two runs across in the 10th inning to hand the Roadrunners a 14-12 defeat in the Southland Conference opener at Roadrunner Field.

UTSA, which played its first extra-inning contest this year, tied a season high with 15 hits and scored seven runs - all earned - off ULM starter Matt Green. Green came into the game as the top pitcher in the league at 5-0 with a 1.12 ERA. The Roadrunners scored six runs in the sixth, added two in the seventh and scored three runs in the ninth to force the extra frame. UTSA fell to 4-16 and 0-1 in the league, while the Indians improved to 13-5 and 1-0 in the conference.

The teams combined for 26 runs and 39 hits, but the Roadrunners recorded six errors.

Trailing by three, UTSA netted the tying runs off ULM reliever James Stephens, who was credited with the win. Senior Eric Moreno led off with a single to left field and was pinch-run for by Brandon Koger. Two batter later, junior Lee Todesco walked, and pinch runner Phillip Allen relieved him at first base. On a 1-0 pitch, junior J.R. Voyles doubled deep into the center field gap to score Koger and Allen to make it 12-11. After Ryan Saltzgaber grounded out to push Voyles to third, senior Sean Danielson squeezed a double just inside third base to plate Voyles with the tying run.

The Indians plated the go-ahead runs in the extra inning off UTSA junior reliever Noah Tritz, who absorbed the first loss of his career. Dexter Fontenot led off with a single and moved to third as Adam Barfield doubled down the right field line. Fontenot scored the game-winner on a single up the middle by Julian Tafoya. Ty Rollinson's sacrifice fly scored Barfield with the final run.

The Indians broke the scoreless game open in the third with nine runs off Roadrunner starter Aaron Rodriguez and reliever Blake Brannon. ULM registered seven hits in the inning and was also assisted by four UTSA errors in sending 14 men to the plate. Daniel Raymond had the big blow of the inning with a grand slam.

Green cruised through the first three innings untouched before junior Ryan Crew broke the ice with a double in the fourth. In the sixth, though, the Roadrunners touched Green for six runs on six hits, sending 10 men to the plate. Crew hit his first home of the season, a two-run job, for the first two Roadrunner runs. Danielson had two singles in the inning, including one for an RBI.

UTSA added two runs in the seventh to cut the Indian advantage to just 11-9. ULM plated a run in the eighth before the ninth-inning UTSA rally.

Crew led the Roadrunners with a 3-for-5 afternoon to raise his average to a team-leading .347. Senior Stephen Holdren also had three hits along with Danielson. Voyles recorded a career high four RBIs. Todesco was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Rollinson and Fontenot did most of the damage with five hits apiece for ULM, which totaled 24 safeties in the game.

The teams will meet again tomorrow at Roadrunner Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
