UTSA tennis teams return home to host conference matches this weekend

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA Tennis Center will be the site for a pair of Southland Conference tennis matches this weekend, as the UTSA men will face Lamar on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m., while the women will host Stephen F. Austin in a match that will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 20.

The men enter Saturday's match with an overall record of 8-2 and are 1-0 in SLC play, with a 6-1 win over Texas-Pan American on March 6. UTSA has won five of the last six matches by using solid singles and doubles play. Senior Hetori Chaves leads the Roadrunners with a singles record of 8-1 while playing in the Nos. 3 thru 6 positions. Junior Joe Michael Olfindo is 8-2 in singles.

Newcomers Adam Becker and Anthony Portois have combined for a 6-2 record in doubles while playing at No. 2 and 3. Seniors Dennis Andrade and Ricardo Almeida have a 5-3 record while playing at No. 1.

The women enter Sunday's match with a 3-8 overall record, but are 2-1 in SLC play, with wins over Northwestern State and Nicholls State. The Roadrunners have won two of the last three matches.

Freshman Tanya Hasking, who has played primarily at No. 4 singles, has fashioned a 4-5 record this spring to lead the team in wins. Posting three singles wins are Rachael Hansen, Barbara Mooney and Nadezda Rossikhina.

Hasking has combined with Mooney for a 2-3 doubles mark at No. 1, while Massiel Martinez and Mooney are 2-4 while also playing in the first position. Hasking has combined with Rossikhina for a 2-1 record at No. 2.

Following this weekend's matches, the men will return to action on Monday, March 21 with an 11 a.m. non-conference match against New Mexico State at the UTSA Tennis Center. The women's next match will be March 22 at Texas State, beginning at 3 p.m.
