DALLAS – The middle innings were not kind to The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team Wednesday at Dallas Baptist. The Patriots scored eight of their nine runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to hand the visiting Roadrunners a 9-4 defeat on a frigid night at Patriot Field.
UTSA, coming into the game as winners of three of its last four, dropped to 4-15, while the Patriots improved to 12-10 and swept the four-game season series with the Roadrunners.
Dallas Baptist struck first in the third inning with four runs – all with two out - as leadoff and number eight hitter Garrett Baker laced his first double of the year down the left field line. Baker scored three batters later when third baseman Cody Montgomery looped a Texas-league single to center field. UTSA reliever Caleb Barton came on to relieve Ruffin, and, after Montgomery stole second, Israel Victor drew a walk and both moved up a base on a wild pitch.
Montgomery then scored on a Roadrunner fielding error off the bat of Drew Holder, and Victor followed suit across the plate with the third run off a Daniel Magness single. Holder then recorded the fourth Patriot run when Jeremy Goldschmeding singled to left field.
UTSA countered with its three runs in the fourth inning as junior Ryan Crew singled and moved to second when senior Stephen Holdren drew a walk. Crew raced around to score as senior Eric Moreno smashed his third double of the year deep off the left centerfield wall. Moreno and Holdren then trotted across the dish when senior Chris Lewis nailed his sixth double of the year into the left field corner off Patriot starter Randall Taylor.
The Patriots tacked on another run in the fourth and plated three runs in the fifth off UTSA reliever Blake Brannon, who made his team-leading 12th appearance. Victor led off with a single and scored on Holder’s triple off the center field wall. Holder circled the bases and scored on the play when UTSA center fielder Sean Danielson’s relay throw eluded the cut-off man and sailed into the home dugout. Magness made it 8-3 Patriots on the next pitch as he sent his first home of the season over the right field wall. DBU added its final run in the eighth inning.
The Roadrunners got one back in ninth when Tyler Johnson hit his first career triple to score junior catcher Robbie Johns. UTSA had runners on first and third but DBU reliever coaxed a pop out and a strikeout to end the threat and the game.
Lewis was 2-for-3 with the pair of two-baggers at the plate for UTSA, which had five hits. He also led the Roadrunners with two RBIs to push his season total to a team-high 14. Magness was 3-for-3 with two triples to lead DBU.
Ruffin gave up just one earned run but was slapped with the loss to fall to 1-3. The Roadrunners used six pitchers and 14 position players. Taylor went eight complete for the DBU win.
The Roadrunners open the conference portion of their 2005 schedule this weekend when Louisiana-Monroe visits for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
