Roadrunners win 19th straight home game, sweep McNeese State with 5-1 victory

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Senior Krystal Gibson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to propel the UTSA softball team to a 5-1 victory over McNeese State Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field. The victory extended the Roadrunners’ home winning streak to 19 games and their Southland Conference regular season winning streak to nine.

UTSA improves to 19-10 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the Cowgirls fall to 8-20 and 1-5.

With the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior Stacey Gillespie led off with one of her two hits on the day, a sharp single to left center field and junior Jenny Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice sacrifice bunt with Gillespie safe at second. Gibson then lined a pitch from McNeese State starter Jessica Denham over the fence in left center for the backbreaker, putting the Roadrunners comfortably ahead, 4-1.

For good measure, junior Jessica Rogers blasted her 13th dinger of the season in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

After three scoreless innings, UTSA finally got on the board with a run in the fourth. Junior Mel Torres reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on a two-out single just in front of the center fielder by Rogers to make it 1-0.

The Cowgirls answered in the top of the fifth with a solo homer to left by Rachael Phillips to tie the score at 1-1.

Sophomore Ursula Mares allowed just one run on five hits, striking out four in seven innings of work to run her record to 10-5 on the season. Mares struck out the conference’s leading hitter, Beth Jordan, five times in the series. Denham (1-10) allowed five earned runs on eight hits for her second loss of the series.

The Roadrunners return to action with a three-game series at Stephen F. Austin next Saturday-Sunday, March 19-20, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
