Buteaux earns All-America honor with school-record performance at NCAA Indoor Championships

SAN ANTONIO - Junior Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) picked up his first All-America certificate with a school record-breaking performance in the men’s heptathlon Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Arkansas at Randal Tyson Track Center.

Buteaux scored a career-best and UTSA-record 5,519 points for a seventh-place finish in the seven-event, two-day competition. He surpassed three-time All-American Justin Youngblood’s school-record of 5,512 by seven points in becoming the school’s third All-American (second indoors). Buteaux, who entered the day in eighth place after a 2,950-point effort on Friday, posted personal bests of 8.10 in the 60-meter hurdles and 15-5 in the pole vault along the way to the record showing.

"For Brandon to come in here and earn All-America honors in his first trip to nationals is pretty special, "head coach Aaron Fox said. "He needed to come in with the attitude of being solid all the way through both days and he did just that. It was an awesome performance."

With two points from Buteaux's seventh-place finish, the UTSA men finished tied for 48th in the final team standings, the highest national indoor finish in school history. Arkansas won the men's crown, while Tennessee took top honors on the women's side.

In the women’s pentathlon, junior Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) was in top-eight contention through three events, but fouled on all three attempts in the long jump and did not finish the competition.
