UTSA shuts out Evansville, 4-0

SAN ANTONIO - Sophomore Ursula Mares struck out nine batters in a four-hit shutout and senior Jennifer Davis and junior Jessica Els hit one home run each to lead the UTSA softball team past Evansville, 4-0, Tuesday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 16-8 on the season. Evansville, which was 40-20 in 2004 and beat No. 4 Texas on Sunday, 2-0, fell to 7-11.

Mares worked seven innings in her fourth shutout of the year, allowing just four hits and two walks in improving her record to 8-4 on the season. Katie Markle allowed four runs on six hits in falling to 3-4.

Els broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth, taking a two-out, 0-2 pitch over the center field fence for a solo home run to put the Roadrunners up, 1-0.

Davis added to the lead in the fifth with a three-run blast over the left center field fence. Senior Krystal Gibson drew a two-out walk and junior Jenny Garcia singled just over the pitcher’s head to put runners at first and second for Davis’ long ball, which also came on an 0-2 pitch.

Ashley Werner led the Purple Aces with a 2-for-3 outing, while juniors Jessica Rogers and Stacey Gillespie and senior Jessica Ellison also had hits for UTSA.

The Roadrunners travel to Austin on Wednesday, March 9, for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Texas.
