MCALLEN, Texas - The UTSA men's tennis team opened Southland Conference play with a 6-1 decision over the Texas-Pan American Broncs on Sunday, in a match moved inside at the Summit Sport Club in McAllen because of rainy conditions.
UTSA, which improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, opened the match by winning all three doubles matches as Jonas Hoglund and Hetori Chaves prevailed 8-6 at No. 1 over UTPA's Jeremy Salvo and Rehman Esmail. At No. 2, UTSA's Adam Becker and Anthony Portois won 8-4 over Oliver Steil and Gary Bianco. While at No. 3, Dennis Andrade and Nate Avila also scored an 8-4 win over Pierre Cantu and Nik Porter.
In singles play, the Roadrunners won five of the six matches with wins in the No. 2 through No. 6 slots. Anthony Portois scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Salvo at No. 2. Hoglund defeated Porter at No. 3 by a 7-6, 6-1 count. Chaves won a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 decision over Steil at No. 4. Joe Michael Olfindo improved to 6-0 in spring singles with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over Esmail. While Avila was nearly perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cantu at No. 6.
The Roadrunners will return to action this week by hosting Saint Joseph's of Indiana on Tuesday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center. UTSA will return to the road this weekend with matches at Tennessee-Chattanooga on March 11, East Tennessee State on March 12 and Belmont on March 13.
