Northwestern State ends UTSA's season in SLC Tournament First Round, 51-48

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team saw its season come to an abrupt end Monday in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at Northwestern State, 51-48.

The fifth-seeded Roadrunners held a seven-point lead, 48-41, with 4:41 left, but fourth-seeded NSU scored the final 10 points as the Roadrunners ended their 2004-2005 season at 16-12. NSU improved to 17-11.

UTSA held a 23-19 lead at the half and increased the lead to as much as 10, 38-28, with 9:40 remaining after a Lacy Mingee jumper. The Roadrunners continued to lead by ten and led 42-32 with 7:40 left before the Lady Demons scored the next seven points to cut the margin to just three, at 42-39.

The, with 3:42 left and UTSA leading 48-43, a technical foul was called on the UTSA bench on top of a deadball call on Mingee. Beth Tallant hit two free throws, and Chassidy Jones hit two to bring the Lady Demons back to within one, 48-47, with 3:24 left. Tallant then hit the eventual game-winning turnaround shot with 25 seconds left.

In the first half, UTSA jumped out to a 14-4 lead at the 13:25 mark and led by as many as 13, at 21-8, with 10:09 left. But, the Lady Demons outscored UTSA 11-2 in the final nine minutes as the Roadrunners went 1-for-7 in the final 9:24 of the first half.

For the game, UTSA shot 39 percent and held the Lady Demons to just 30 percent. UTSA also out-rebounded NSU, the leading rebounding team in the conference, 37-34.

Mingee led UTSA with 12 points, while SLC Freshman of the Year Richelle Parks had 10. Jones led NSU with 12 points, while Amanda Bennett had 11 and Tallant with 10. The Roadrunners had 26 turnovers.
