Elizondo wins St. Croix Collegiate Classic; Roadrunners finish fifth Final Combined Results | Final Media Results | Final Stats
ST. CROIX, Virgin Islands – Junior John Elizondo fired a final-round 72 to hold on for a one-shot individual victory Sunday at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic held at Carambola Golf Club (6,809 yards, par 72). The UTSA men finished tied fifth place in the team standings.
Elizondo, who carded a tournament-best six-under 66 in the first round on Friday, edged Garrett Jones of Wisconsin by one stroke in the individual standings for his first win of the year and second of his career. Thanks to going eight-under on par fives for the weekend, Elizondo’s three-round total of five-under 66-73-72=211 was one better than Jones’ 72-70-70=212. The Brackenridge High School product also won individual honors in a sudden-death playoff at the 2003 Crown Colony Classic.
In the team standings, the Roadrunners entered the day tied for fourth after a pair of 287s, but fell to a three-way tie with Ohio State and Charleston Southern for fifth after a final round 302. Xavier, which served as the host team, won the team title by four shots over Lamar and Rhode Island, 868-872. UNC Greensboro was fourth with an 874.
Sophomore Kitt Thabungkan tied for 14th with rounds of 72-68-78=218, while sophomore Matt Johnston tied for 44th at 76-70-79=225. Freshmen Shane Costelloe and Nick Olivarri tied for 56th (73-79-76=228) and 63rd (77-76-76=229).
The Roadrunners return to the course on March 19-20 when the compete in the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Ocala, Fla.
