Texas Tech runs past Roadrunners, 22-7

MIDLAND, Texas – The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team saw the 28th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders send 15 men to the plate and score 10 runs in the fourth inning en route to a 22-7 victory over the Roadrunners Sunday in the final game of the RockHounds College Classic at the First American Bank Ballpark.

UTSA fell to 0-10, while TTU improved to 10-1. UTSA starting pitcher Jason Vecchio allowed seven runs and was chased in the fourth for the loss. He fell to 0-3 on the year. Bil Carnline tossed seven complete innings for TTU to pick up his third win of the year.

The Red Raiders scored two in the first inning before the Roadrunners countered with a run in the second. Sophomore Michael McKennon singled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on senior Eric Moreno's two-bagger into the right field corner. McKennon then scored on junior Lee Todesco's sacrifice fly.

UTSA tied the game at 2-2 in the third when sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber singled to lead off and moved to second on senior Sean Danielson's grounder to third that was misplayed. Redshirt freshman Phillip Allen, making his first career defensive start in right field, then moved the Roadrunner duo over with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Ryan Crew's grounder to first allowed Danielson to score UTSA's second run.

Texas Tech pushed ahead 3-2 in the third, then broke the game open with 10 runs in the fourth. The Red Raiders recorded six hits and scored eight of their runs in the inning with two outs. Cameron Blair's first of two homers' a three-run job, was the big blow in the inning.

Texas Tech added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and scored five more in the seventh for a 20-4 lead. UTSA scored three runs in the seventh and added two in the ninth, while TTU pushed across two in the eighth for the final margin.

Blair went 4-for-6 with two homers and six RBIs to lead TTU, while Madison Edwards went 3-for-6 with a trio of RBIs.

Allen led UTSA at the plate with a 2-for-4 day. He also provided two RBIs. Danielson and Saltzgaber each had two hits as well, while Chris Lewis, playing catcher for the first time this year, hit a triple for the second consecutive game.

The Roadrunners will return home Tuesday night, March 1, to host eighth-ranked Baylor at 6 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
