EL PASO, Texas – Senior Jennifer Davis went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two driven in to help lead the UTSA softball team past UTEP, 9-3, during day two of the UTEP Miner Invitational Saturday at Helen of Troy Field.
With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 11-7 on the season and 4-0 in the tournament. UTEP falls to 5-12 and 2-2.
UTSA struck for three runs on four hits in the top of the first. Junior Jenny Garcia lined a one-out single through the left side, stole second and scored on an RBI-single by Davis. Sophomore Aimee Murray followed with a single and junior Jessica Rogers walked to load the bases. Junior Jessica Els slapped a single to left center that plated two runs and put UTSA up 3-0.
The Roadrunners tacked on two more runs in the third on a two-run blast to right field by Rogers that scored Davis, who reached on a single.
UTSA extended the lead to 7-0 in the fourth. Junior Mel Torres drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out single by Davis. Davis came home with her third run on an RBI-double to right center by Murray.
The Miners got on the board in the bottom of the frame as Deana Camacho singled and scored on a two-run homer to left center by Ashley Bennett. Kristin Hardy then walked and pinch-runner Jennifer Garcia came home on a double to right by Simone Holland that chased UTSA starter Amanda Nikolenko and pulled UTEP to within four at 7-3. Sophomore Ursula Mares came on to retire the next batter via the strikeout and end the inning.
The Roadrunners answered with another two-run inning in the top of the fifth. Els reached on an error and sophomore Stevi Simpson followed with a single and both advanced on a wild pitch to put runners at second and third with no outs. After a groundout and a strikeout, senior Krystal Gibson came through with a clutch two-run double to right that put UTSA back up by six, 9-3.
The Roadrunners will play the winner of New Mexico State and Northern Colorado in the semifinal game Sunday at 2 p.m. The championship game follows at 4:30.
