No. 12 Texas A&M edges Roadrunners, 4-1

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – University of Texas at San Antonio junior right-hander Ryan Crew, making his first career start, pitched four strong innings against no. 12 Texas A&M Tuesday night at Wolff Stadium, but unfortunately the Roadrunner bats were silenced by the Aggie pitching staff in a 4-1 loss for UTSA.

UTSA allowed just eight hits but was again denied its first win of the season, falling to 0-8, while the Aggies improved to 6-2.

Crew tossed the first four innings, allowing three Aggie runs and only four hits before giving way in the fifth to Aaron Rodriguez. The senior southpaw pitched four complete innings and allowed just three hits and one run. Sophomore Blake Brannon made his sixth appearance of the year in the ninth inning to close the game. Crew was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1.

Texas A&M starter Kyle Marlatt, who picked up a win in relief the last time the two teams met in 2004, was credited with his first victory of the year, throwing five innings and allowing just two hits and the lone Roadrunner run. Jordan Chambless notched his first save of the year, tossing the final inning with one hit allowed.

The Aggies lit the scoreboard line score first with a pair of runs in the third inning. John Infante singled to left field, stole second, and scored when Cliff Pennington smacked a triple to the center field wall. Pennington then scored the Aggies' second run on a wild pitch.

The Roadrunners answered in the bottom of the inning with a run. Second baseman J.R. Voyles walked to lead off the frame and went to second on Ryan Saltzgaber’s sacrifice bunt. Senior centerfielder Sean Danielson plated Voyles with a double to right center.

Texas A&M added runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the final margin. In the fourth, Austin Boggs drew a walk to lead off the inning. After Justin Pouk was hit and Brandon Glover walked, Todd Sebek pushed Boggs across with a sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Ryan Hill singled and later scored when Glover banged a single to center field and went to second on the throw trying to gun down Hill.

Danielson went 2-for-4 with an RBI for UTSA, while Hill and Pennington recorded two hits each for Texas A&M. Crew, Saltzgaber and senior Eric Moreno also notched hits for UTSA, while Crew stole his first base of the year.

The Roadrunners return to the field on Friday in Midland, Texas, at the Rockhounds College Classic. UTSA faces Lamar in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the Roadrunners meet New Mexico State at 11 a.m. before battling Texas Tech at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
