LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Junior Jessica Rogers went 2-for-4 with two home runs to help lead the UTSA softball team to an 8-4 victory over New Mexico State Saturday at the Troy Cox Classic. In the first game of the day, No. 19 Nebraska rallied from a 6-3 deficit for a 14-6 win over the Roadrunners.
UTSA moves to 7-6 on the season and 3-1 in the Troy Cox Classic. Nebraska moved to 4-0 in the tourney after victories over UTSA and Loyola-Chicago Saturday, while New Mexico State dropped to 2-2 with losses against UTSA and Colorado State.
In the 8-4 win over the Aggies, Rogers launched two home runs to increase her season total to eight in 13 games. Junior Jessica Els collected two hits, including one long ball, while junior Jenny Garcia extended her hitting streak to nine games with two hits.
NMSU took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but UTSA knotted the score in the top of the third on Rogers’ first round-tripper of the day.
The Roadrunners then took their first lead in the fourth on a solo homer by Els, before Rogers’ two-run blast in the fifth extended the margin to 4-1. UTSA added four runs in the sixth, two on a single by Garcia, to make it 8-1.
The Aggies cut the gap to four with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but UTSA was able to hold off any further rallies for the victory.
Freshman Amanda Nikolenko worked five and one-third innings in improving to 4-3 on the year, while junior Hope Ortiz pitced one and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief.
In the 14-6 loss to the nationally-ranked Huskers, UTSA opened leads of 3-0 and 6-3 after two at-bats, only to have Nebraska fight back to within one run through two frames. The Huskers then took the lead for good with a five-run fourth, and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to put the eight-run rule in effect.
Sophomore Aimee Murray led the Roadrunners’ offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a three-run homer in the second. Rogers also had two hits, including a double, and one RBI.
