SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Michael McKennon had two hits and drove in three runs, but Dallas Baptist exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning in defeating UTSA, 12-4, Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The Patriots get the three-game series sweep with the win and improve to 6-2 overall. The Roadrunners fall to 0-7 on the year.
McKennon led the UTSA offense, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, while juniors Ryan Crew and Robbie Johns and sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber all added one hit apiece.
DBU’s Ryan Olivo led all hitters with four hits and two RBI, while Jeremy Goldschmeding, Austin Krum and Drew Holder contributed three hits each in an 18-hit performance by the Patriots bats.
After a pair of scoreless innings, DBU struck for two runs in the third on an RBI-double by Goldschmeding and an RBI-single by Olivo.
The Patriots tacked on one run each in three consecutive innings, beginning with an RBI-single by Cody Montgomery in the fifth. A double steal with Olivo scoring from third increased the lead to 4-0 in the sixth and another run-scoring single by Goldschmeding in the seventh put the Patriots up 5-0.
DBU broke the game open with seven runs on nine hits in the top of the eighth, the final run scoring on an infield single by pinch-hitter Matt Ritter.
UTSA got three runs back in the bottom half of the eighth. DBU walked the bases loaded with no outs and McKennon followed with a sharp double down the right field line, scoring two. Junior Lee Todesco’s sacrifice fly to left plated the third run, cutting the deficit to nine.
The Roadrunners tallied one more run in the ninth on an RBI-single by McKennon, but DBU closed out the series on a strikeout.
Jereme Wilson worked six scoreless innings in improving to 1-0 on the season. Junior Jason Vecchio allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings in falling to 0-2.
The Roadrunners host No. 12 Texas A&M Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Wolff Stadium
