UTSA women pound Southeastern Louisiana, 60-40
Box Score
HAMMOND, La. – Senior Nicole Dunson scored a career high 19 points and hit five consecutive three pointers to lead the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team to a 60-40 Southland Conference road victory at Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.
UTSA upped its overall record to 13-9 and 7-4 in the league, while the Lady Lions fell for the sixth time in seven games to go to 9-14 and 3-9 in the SLC.
Dunson, who hit all three of her trey attempts off the bench Saturday against Texas State, connected on her first five tonight for eight consecutive treys, which is a school record. Current Roadrunner assistant coach Amber Prose held the previous record in 2001. She finally misfired on a long-range jumper late in the second half but not before the Roadrunners were in complete control of the game. Freshman Richelle Parks also netted double figures with 11 points, while junior Katie Sandefur pulled down 11 rebounds as the Roadrunners won the battle of the boards, 43-30.
After beginning the game 2-of-12 from the floor, UTSA responded by going 22-of-39 throughout the rest of the game while limiting the Lady Lions to just 25 percent shooting for the game (15-of-59). SLU was only 2-of-19 from three-point range, and the Roadrunners held the league’s number one and two scorers, Nakeya Downing and Dacia McGowan to 18 points combined. The pair came into the game averaging more than 31 points as a duo.
A 14-2 Roadrunner run to end the first half sparked the visitors, whose 20-point lead at the end was their largest. Trailing 17-16 with 5:20 remaining in the first half after a tip-in by SLU’s Tai Cawthon, UTSA scored the next seven points to lead 23-17 with 2:17 left. After a Downing jumper cut it to four, at 23-19, the Roadrunners closed the first period with the next seven points for a 30-19 halftime lead.
In the final half, the Lady Lions closed to within seven, at 34-27, with 13:16 left, but the Roadrunners scored the next 12 points to push the margin to 19, at 46-27. Dunson dropped in two treys during the run. SLU never trimmed the margin lower than 15 the rest of the game.
UTSA continues on its Louisiana road trip Saturday at Nicholls State. Tip-off in Thibodaux, La., is scheduled for 2 p.m.
