SLC leading Southeastern Louisiana holds off UTSA for 69-66 victory

Box Score

HAMMOND, LA. - Ricky Woods scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Southeastern Louisiana built a 13-point lead and then held off a furious UTSA rush to score a 69-66 victory over the Roadrunners at the University Center.

The Lions with the win improved to 18-7 overall and 10-2 in the Southland Conference, good for first place. Nate Lofton added 14 points, while Terry Bryant added 12.

UTSA, which had a two-game winning streak stopped, were led by Anthony Fuqua with 12 points, while David President added 11, and John Millsap, 10. The loss drops UTSA to 11-11 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

Trailing 51-38 with 15:29 to play in the game, UTSA went on a 10-2 run to close within 53-48 on a layup by Abe Donlon with 11:31 remaining.

The Lions maintained the advantage and led 65-57 on a free throw by Chris Lee with 51 seconds to play.

A 3-point field goal and three free throws by Justin Harbert brought the Roadrunners to within 67-66 with 12 seconds to play.

President then stole the inbounds pass and called timeout for UTSA with 10 seconds remaining.

UTSA was unable to get off the potential game-winning shot as Rapheal Posey turned the ball over with a double team at the free throw line.

Two Neill Berry free throws with 2.4 seconds to play produced the final margin for the Lions. A Harbert halfcourt 3-point try was wide at the buzzer.

"We gave up too many turnovers on the perimeter and that led to some easy points for the Lions," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "I was proud of the way we hung in there. But if you go on the road and shoot 52 percent you expect to win. Tonight we didn't because of other mistakes."

UTSA had 18 turnovers for the game and was outrebounded for only the sixth time all season by a 33-31 count by Southeastern.

The Roadrunners trailed 39-31 at halftime as Woods had 13 of his points in the opening 20 minutes.

UTSA returns to action this Saturday, Feb. 19 at Nicholls State with a 5 p.m. game against the Colonels.
