SAN ANTONIO - Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ursula Mares and junior third baseman Jessica Rogers have been named Southland Conference Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Mares (pictured right) posted a 2-1 record, a 1.17 earned run average and 25 strikeouts and allowed just three earned runs, 13 hits and two walks in tossing three complete games last week, helping the Roadrunners to a 4-2 mark in six games. In a 1-0 loss at No. 23 Texas A&M last Wednesday, Mares, the 2004 SLC Tournament MVP, allowed just one run on four hits. She matched her career high with 10 strikeouts in a 10-2 run-ruling of Texas-El Paso during the first day of the Fastpitch Express College Classic in San Antonio. Two days later in what turned out to be the championship game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Mares hurled a complete-game, shutout with a career-high 11 punchouts in handing the Islanders their first loss of the season, 5-0.
Rogers (left) batted .409 (9-for-22) for the week, slugging four home runs and a double and driving in 12 runs. She posted a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .409 on-base percentage and struck out just twice in 22 plate appearances. She hit two of her long balls in a 10-2 rout of Texas-El Paso and launched a grand slam in a 12-1 win over Centenary, an NCAA Tournament team last year, both on the first day of the Fastpitch Express College Classic. Rogers, the 2004 SLC Softball Student-Athlete of the Year, also had a two-run home run in a 9-0 win over North Texas and three hits in a 6-5 loss at No. 23 Texas A&M.
The Roadrunners return to action this Friday-Sunday, Feb. 18-20, when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to compete in the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State. On Friday, UTSA faces Loyola (Ill.) at 10 a.m. Central and Colorado State at noon.
