SAN ANTONIO – Junior forward Katie Sandefur hit a six-foot jumper from the right side with six seconds left on the game clock and one on the shot clock Saturday afternoon to give the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team a 71-69 win over rival Texas State at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners, who nearly wasted a 12-point second half lead, improved to 12-9 and 6-4 in the Southland Conference, while the Bobcats dropped their second consecutive SLC game to fall to 11-10 and 8-3 in the league.

The Roadrunners led 68-56 with 6:14 left in the game after a pair of free throws by Sandefur, but the Bobcats clawed back into the game with a 12-1 run over the next 5:12. Tori Talbert’s two free throws tied the contest at 69 with 35 ticks left. The Roadrunners then ran the shot clock down to one before Sandefur, who scored all 12 of her points in the second half, sank a turnaround shot that almost grazed the side of the basket with six seconds left. The shot allowed UTSA to defeat the Bobcats for the 11th time in the last 15 games.

UTSA led 43-37 at the half and ran the margin to 11, 61-50, at the 9:49 mark. The Bobcats had trimmed the lead to seven, at 57-50, with 10:51 remaining, but the Roadrunners outscored TSU 11-6 over the next four minutes to take the 68-56 lead.

Freshman Richelle Parks led the Roadrunners with 17 points and eight rebounds, while senior Kim Reed nearly set a single game assist record with 12 handouts, coming up one short of the record held by Shelley Seale in 1983. Sophomore Ana Oliveira scored a career high 12 points, including going 8-of-8 at the free throw line as the Roadrunners hit 79 percent from the charity stripe as a team.

Tamara Thompson led the Bobcats with 22 points, while Talbert, the league’s top scorer, notched 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Roadrunners limited Talbert to just four points in the second half. Ashley McGruder scored 12.

For the game, the Roadrunners shot 48 percent from the field (24-of-50) and had 29 rebounds.
