SAN ANTONIO – After recording just five hits and one run in the season opener Friday night, the UTSA baseball team notched 13 hits and scored seven runs on Saturday, but it was not enough to overcome a balanced scoring effort by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Islanders handed the Roadrunners a 10-7 defeat at Wolff Stadium. The Islanders scored runs in six of the nine innings.
UTSA dropped the second of the three-game series, with the finale scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow at Wolff, while the Islanders improved to 2-3 on the year.
Roadrunner starter Josh Ruffin, who made his first career start, was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs over 3.2 innings. Ruffin tallied four strikeouts. Islander starter Adam Bruce tossed 6.2 innings for his first win of the year. He allowed 10 hits and six runs.
Offensively for UTSA, junior Lee Todesco went 3-for-5 with his first double of the year, while sophomore Michael McKennon, senior Eric Moreno, and junior Ryan Crew and J.R. Voyles had two hits apiece. McKennon cracked the Roadrunners’ first round-tripper of the year, a two-run shot in the seventh inning.
The Islanders wasted little time in jumping on Ruffin in the first inning. Jaime Landin, who went 5-for-6 at the plate, singled and was brought home on a two-run blast to left field by Chuck Carter. The Roadrunners answered in their half of the inning and then jumped on top 3-2 in the second inning. In the first, Crew’s sacrifice fly plated senior Sean Danielson, who had singled, advanced to second and stole third.
In the second, Moreno singled, and then senior Chris Lewis doubled. Moreno later scored when senior Ryan Saltzgaber’s at-bat was misplayed by Islander second baseman Ruben Munoz. Catcher Robbie Johns then plated Lewis with a sacrifice fly.
The Islanders pushed ahead 8-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth innings and a single tally in the fifth. The Roadrunners crept to within two, at 8-6, with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Danielson walked and scored when McKennon sent a shot over the left field wall.
The Islanders added two insurance runs in the ninth inning before UTSA scored the game’s final run in the bottom of the ninth. In the ninth, Todesco singled to score McKennon, who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning.
Carter was 3-for-6 for TAMU-CC with four RBI, while Jason Graham also had three safeties. Junior transfer Noah Tritz made his first Roadrunner appearance, tossing 1.2 innings, while junior Caleb Barton closed the game on the mound. Michael Hatfield secured the final out to record his first save of the year for the Islanders.
