Roadrunners drop pitcher's duel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Senior left-hander Aaron Rodriguez allowed just one run over six and a third innings Friday night at Wolff Stadium, but his performance was overshadowed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Trey Hearne, who tossed a complete game five-hitter and shut out the Roadrunners 1-0 in UTSA's season opener.

The Roadrunners fell to 0-1 on the young season, while the TAMU-CC Islanders picked up their first win of the year to improve to 1-3.

Rodriguez surrendered six hits and walked just three while registering three strikeouts. He was relieved in the seventh inning by sophomore Blake Brannon, who went 1.2 innings and didn't allow a run. Junior college transfer Caleb Barton got the final three outs in the ninth inning for his first action as a Roadrunner, but UTSA could not get the bats going, notching just five hits and no extra base safeties.

Hearne went the distance, recording nine strikeouts and walking five. He retired seven straight Roadrunners from the third through fifth innings. Junior J.R. Voyles went 2-for-4 at the plate for UTSA, while senior transfer Sean Danielson led off the first with a single for his first UTSA hit. Juniors Lee Todesco and Robbie Johns also recorded hits for the Roadrunners. Jamie Landin, Jorge Mico and Jon Kourie led the Islanders with two hits apiece as TAMU-CC mustered eight hits on the night.

The Roadrunners immediately had an opportunity to take a lead in the first inning, but Danielson was thrown out at home on a double steal attempt with junior Ryan Crew at first. Danielson singled to lead off the frame, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. After the thwarted steal attempt, Crew advanced to third on another passed ball but was stranded when Todesco struck out.

The Islanders scored the game's lone run in the fourth inning. Centerfielder Chuck Carter led off with a free pass and moved to second on a balk. He moved another base on Mico's single and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Kourie.

UTSA had a runner in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings but could not find a way to bring them in. The Roadrunners left eight men on base, while the Islanders stranded seven. Danielson tallied UTSA's first stolen base of the 2005 season.  In the field, the Roadrunners turned three double plays.

The two teams will meet again at Wolff Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. and then conclude the weekend series on Sunday at Wolff at 1 p.m.
