UTSA women drop 57-43 decision at Texas-Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Texas-Arlington Lady Mavericks built a 38-12 halftime lead Thursday night and never looked back in handing the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team a 57-43 defeat at Texas Hall.

UTSA fell to 11-9 and 5-4 in the league, while the Lady Mavericks improved to 14-7 and 9-1 in the Southland Conference.

Freshman Richelle Parks led the Roadrunners with 12 points, but UTSA fell victim to a stifling Lady Maverick defense that forced 25 turnovers. The Roadrunners turned the ball over 17 times in the first half and mustered just six shots as they trailed by 26 at the break.

Trailing 21-12 with 8:32 left in the first half, the Roadrunners saw the Lady Mavericks score the final 17 points in the initial half. The Roadrunners opened the second half on a 8-1 run and trailed 39-20 with 14:36 left in the game, but UTA went on an 11-4 run to build their largest lead to 26, at 50-24, with 8:23 left in the game. The Roadrunners were able to trim the lead down to as low as 14 on two occasions but settled for the 14-point setback.

For the game, the Roadrunners actually out-shot the Lady Mavericks, finishing the contest 20-of-45 from the field for 44 percent, while UTA hit 22-of-56 for 39 percent. The Roadrunners hit just 1-of-10 from three-point range. UTSA grabbed 32 rebounds, while the Lady Mavericks recorded 34 rebounds. Rola Ogunoye led UTA with 19 points, while Ashley Bobb had 12.

The Roadrunners return to the Convocation Center on Saturday to host Texas State at 2 p.m.
