COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Senior Jennifer Davis went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and junior Jessica Rogers collected three hits, but No. 23 Texas A&M held off a late UTSA rally for a 6-5 win in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex. Texas A&M held off another late Roadrunner rally in game two for a 1-0 victory and the sweep.
Texas A&M improves to 3-0 on the season, while UTSA falls to 0-5.
UTSA jumped on the board in the top of the second on a solo shot by Torres deep over the right center field fence to put the Roadrunners up, 1-0.
A&M answered in the bottom half of the second as Megan Gibson doubled to the right field corner and scored on a single up the middle by Rocky Spencer.
The Roadrunners took the lead back in their half of the third as senior Krystal Gibson led off with a double to left center off her sister, Megan, and Rogers followed with a single down the third base line to put runners at first and third with no outs. Davis lined a single through the left side of the infield, plating Gibson with UTSA’s second run.
The Aggies grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the third with the help of a strange call on the infield. Joy Davis reached on an error and stole second. Leadoff batter Sharonda McDonald followed with a walk. Davis was then awarded third base on an interference call after a failed pick off attempt at second. McDonald then stole second without a throw, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Jamie Hinshaw plated both runners on a single through the right side of the infield to put A&M back up, 3-2.
A&M tacked on two more runs in the fourth. With two outs, Lindsay Park doubled to left center and pinch runner Morgan Hebert advanced to third on an infield single by Davis. McDonald then followed with another infield single, plating Hebert and Davis.
UTSA got one run back in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to left center from Jennifer Davis. Sophomore Aimee Murray followed with a two-out walk and Torres lined a double to right, but the Aggies got out of the frame with a groundout.
The Aggies increased their lead to three runs again in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI-single by Park that would prove to be the difference.
The Roadrunners cut the deficit to one in the top of the sixth. Megan Gibson walked the bases loaded with no outs and Rogers singled through the right side to pull UTSA within two, at 6-4. Davis then followed with a line drive to center field that was mishandled by the Aggie defense, allowing junior Stacey Gillespie to score and pull the Roadrunners within one. After a fielder’s choice on the infield forced Krystal Gibson out at home, Jill Weynand came on in relief and retired the final batter of the inning and leaving the score at 6-5.
UTSA put the tying run on second in the top of the seventh, but Weynand got out of the jam with a strikeout and a lineout to end the game.
Megan Gibson worked 5 2/3 innings in picking up her first win of the season. Weynand struck out two over 1 1/3 for her first save of the year. Freshman Amanda Nikolenko (0-3) allowed four earned runs and struck out two in six innings of work.
In game two, A&M used a complete-game shutout by Amanda Scarborough and an RBI-single by Jana James for 1-0 win.
McDonald led off the third with a walk, stole second and scored on a single to left by James for the only run of the game.
UTSA mounted a late rally in the top of the seventh as Torres drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a groundout for the second out, sophomore Stevi Simpson lined a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw home that kept Torres at third. Scarborough induced another ground ball out, her 12th of the game, for the final tally.
Sophomore Ursula Mares (0-2) was the tough-luck loser, scattering four hits and the one run over six innings.
The Roadrunners return home to host the Fastpitch Express College Classic on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 11-13, at Roadrunner Field.
