SAN ANTONIO - Scoring wins up and down the lineup, the UTSA men's tennis team opened the 2005 season with a 6-1 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday, Feb. 5 in Prairie View, Texas.
UTSA's scheduled match at Texas A&M on Sunday was postponed due to rain. The Roadrunners and Aggies will make up the match on Sunday, Feb. 20 in College Station at 1:30 p.m.
In the win over Prairie View A&M, UTSA (1-0) received wins at No. 2 singles as Anthony Portois defeated Nicolas Bateman (6-2, 6-3); No. 3 as Ricardo Almeida defeated Andy Nando (6-4, 7-5); No. 4 as Joe Michael Olfindo defeated Kudzal Chiridza (6-3, 6-4); No. 5 as Hetori Chaves defeated Xavier Godoy (7-6, 6-1); and at No. 6 as Adam Becker defeated Luis Godoy (6-3, 6-4).
The Roadrunners swept through doubles as the No. 50 nationally ranked team of Dennis Andrade and Almeida defeated Blessing Buunzawabaya and Xavier Godoy by a 9-7 count at No. 1. Jonas Hoglund and Chaves combined to win 8-2 at No. 2 over Nando and Bateman, while Portois and Becker prevailed 8-1 at No. 3 over Luis Godoy and Chiridza.
UTSA will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 12 as they will host a pair of matches against St. Edward's (10 a.m.) and Laredo Junior College (3 p.m.) at the UTSA Tennis Center.
