Arizona State takes game two from UTSA, 4-2

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. – Senior Jennifer Davis went 3-for-3 with a home run, but Arizona State came back from a 2-1 deficit to score a 4-2 victory over the UTSA softball team in game two of a three-game series Saturday night at Farrington Stadium.

With the win, the Sun Devils improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Roadrunners fall to 0-2.

Davis turned in two singles and a solo homer to lead the UTSA offense, while junior Jessica Rogers, senior Krystal Gibson and junior Mel Torres added a single apiece.

The Roadrunners jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. Rogers drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a single and a two-base error on the ASU center fielder Michelle Smith. Gibson advanced to third with no outs but was stranded.

The Sun Devils answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame. Mindy Cowles continued her hot hitting, following two straight singles by Smith and Rhiannon Baca with a double to the center field wall that plated Smith. ASU kept the rally alive, loading the bases before Nikolenko induced a fly ball to right field to end the threat.

Davis led off the top of the second with the Roadrunners’ first home run of the season, a line drive shot over the left center field wall that put UTSA back on top, 2-1.

ASU took the lead back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Cowles doubled down the left field line and scored on a two-out double down the right field line by Ciri Bryan. Bryan came home on a single up the middle by Heidi Knabe to put the Sun Devils up for the first time, 3-2.

UTSA threatened in the top of the fifth as junior Stacey Gillespie reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. Junior Jessica Rogers followed with a bloop single to left that chased ASU starter Desiree Serrano. Katherine Burkhart entered with runners on first and second and one out, and induced a fly out to center and a groundout to first to get out of the inning.

ASU thwarted another UTSA rally in the top of the sixth. Junior Jessica Els drew a one-out walk. With pinch runner J.J. McQueen on first, Davis followed with her third hit of the evening, a single to left center and an error on the center fielder advanced both runners a base. The Sun Devils got out of the jam on a failed squeeze attempt and a strikeout.

The Sun Devils then added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an infield single by pinch hitter Kim Zadrozny that plated Sharee Zaleski.

Burkhart retired the Roadrunners in order in the top of the seventh in earning her first save of the season. Serrano picked up her first win of the season, while freshman Amanda Nikolenko (0-1) worked five innings, striking out four and allowing four earned runs on nine hits.

Game three is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Central) Sunday.
