Arizona State swings past UTSA, 8-0

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State freshman Mindy Cowles hit two, two-run home runs and senior Valerie Sevilla added two more long balls to lead the Sun Devils past UTSA, 8-0, in game one of a three-game series Friday night at Farrington Stadium.

Arizona State improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 0-1.

Senior Krystal Gibson and sophomores Aimee Murray collected one double apiece to lead UTSA’s effort at the plate.

The Sun Devils struck for two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Valerie Sevilla that scored Rhiannon Baca.

ASU got its second two-run long ball in the bottom of the third from Cowles, a long shot over the center field wall that plated Michelle Smith, who reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Roadrunners threatened in the top of the fourth as Gibson led off the frame with a double to the left center field wall. She advanced to third on a wild pitch, but a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a caught stealing got the Sun Devils out of the inning unscathed.

Cowles slugged her second two-run home run to left in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Baca. Sevilla followed with an opposite field shot to left that just cleared the fence, increasing the ASU lead to 7-0.

A pinch-hit single by Kim Zadrozny in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Ciri Bryan with the final run, ending the game due to the eight-run rule.

Ashley Werschky scattered three hits over six innings in picking up her first win of the year. Sophomore Ursula Mares (0-1) and freshman Amanda Nikolenko each pitched three innings in the loss.

Game two is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. Central.
