Sam Houston State Men Score 72-56 Win Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO - Joe Thompson led four Sam Houston State players in double figures with 14 points as the Bearkats scored a 72-56 win over the UTSA Roadrunners on Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
Sam Houston State improved its record to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in the Southland Conference with the resounding win. Chris Jordan and Ryan Bright added 13 points apiece, while Wilder Auguste added 12.
UTSA lost its second straight home game to fall to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Andre Owens led the Roadrunners with 18 points, while John Millsap scored nine points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds.
Sam Houston State seized control of the game in the first half, using an 11-0 run to lead 29-16 after a Thompson layup with 5:32 to play before halftime. The Bearkats led 33-25 at intermission.
After UTSA cut the lead to 44-38 with 11:31 to play, Sam Houston State answered with 18 straight points and led 62-38 after a basket by Ryan Griffin with 6:45 remaining. The Roadrunners went almost 10 minutes between successful field goals.
"It was one of those nights when everything snowballed against us," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "We had so many good looks at the basket and unfortunately we could get nothing to drop for us. It was a long night."
UTSA, which shot 20 for 61 from the field and 14 of 30 at the free throw line, could get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
The Roadrunners will look to regroup this Saturday, Feb. 5 with a 7 p.m. game in Beaumont, Texas against Lamar.
