PLANO, Texas - UTSA juniors Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) and Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) were named Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Buteaux posted the first NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of the season for the men, scoring a personal-best 5,297 points in finishing third in the heptathlon at the Houston Indoor Invitational last weekend. Buteaux’s performance ranks eighth in the NCAA and included a personal-best 14-9 clearance in the pole vault and an 8.30 clocking in the 60-meter hurdles. This is the second career SLC Athlete of the Week award for Buteaux (Feb. 17, 2004).
Dupree won the pentathlon at the Houston Indoor Invitational on Friday, tallying a career-best and provisional-qualifying 3,942 points to improve her own school record by 21 points. She briefly held the national lead in the event and now ranks third in the collegiate ranks. This is the fourth career weekly award for Dupree, a three-time winner last season.
UTSA now has three Athlete of the Week accolades this season as senior Rosalind Holmes garnered the women’s award last week.
Buteaux, Dupree and the Roadrunner track and field teams will travel back to Houston this Saturday, Feb. 5, to compete in the Hyatt Regency Invitational.
