Southeastern Louisiana scores come-from-behind 63-54 win over UTSA

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Ricky Woods scored 16 points and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions tallied the final seven points of the game in scoring a 63-54 come-from-behind victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Convocation Center.

The Southland Conference leaders improved to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play with the win. Woods was joined in double figures by Terry Bryant and Nate Lofton with 12 points apiece, while Jonathan Patton added 11.

UTSA, which fell to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in the SLC, was led by Andre Owens with 15 points, while Anthony Fuqua and Rapheal Posey added 11 apiece. John Millsap chipped in 10 points.

"We had a hard time against their defense and were really plagued by turnovers which turned this game around," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "We didn't do a good job in our half court sets. Five Southeastern credit, they won because they took better care of the ball and made free throws."

Tied at 25 at halftime, UTSA opened the second half with a 15-2 run and led 40-27 after a layup by Fuqua with 14:18 remaining.

Southeastern Louisiana turned up its defensive intensity at that point and rallied with an 18-5 run to tie the score at 45 after a Woods breakaway dunk with 9:32 remaining.

A layup and free throw by Millsap gave UTSA its final lead of 52-51 with 5:16 to play.

The Lions ended the game with a 13-2 run as Patton scored six of his points during the decisive run.

UTSA, which turned the ball over 20 times, shot 46.7 percent from the floor, but only 10 of 19 at the free throw line.

The Lions connected on only three of 20 3-point field goals, but hit on 12 of 13 free throws.

Owens had 11 first half points for UTSA, while Woods had 10 as the two teams were tied 25-all at halftime.

UTSA, which had an 11-game home winning streak end, will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 3 with an 8 p.m. home game against Sam Houston State.
