Roadrunners cage Lady Lions, 75-64

SAN ANTONIO – Junior Lacy Mingee made her first start of the season Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana and responded with a career high 25 points to propel the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team to a 75-64 win against the Lady Lions at the Convocation Center. Mingee also led the Roadrunners with seven rebounds as UTSA improved to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Southland Conference.
Mingee was 9-of-15 from the field and hit seven free throws. She also recorded two steals and a blocked shot as the Roadrunners won for the ninth time in ten games against SLU, which fell to 8-10 and 2-5 in league play. With her performance, Mingee now needs just 16 more points to climb to 25th on the UTSA career scoring chart.
Senior Lyndsey Greer also provided a spark for UTSA with a career high-tying 14 points, hitting all three treys she attempted. Freshman Richelle Parks was the third Roadrunner in double figures with 12 points.
Senior Kim Reed dished out eight assists, one shy of her career high, and also had six points and five rebounds. UTSA had 16 assists and swiped a season high 18 steals. Nekeya Downing had 25 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Lions, while Dacia McGowan notched 23 points.
The Roadrunners limited the visitors to only 34 percent from the floor (20-of-59) for the game, including just 29 percent (11-of-37) in the final half, when UTSA built its largest lead of the game at 16.
Leading 39-30 at halftime, the Roadrunners outscored the Lady Lions 14-7 in the first 9:20 of the last half for a 53-37 lead after a three-pointer by Greer. SLU trimmed the UTSA advantage to as low as eight on three occasions in the last two minutes, but UTSA held on for its third league victory.
In the opening half, the Roadrunners led 16-12 with 10:19 left but outscored the Lady Lions 16-9 over the next 7:14 to build their largest lead of the first half, at 37-24, after a Mingee jumper with 3:05 left.
The Roadrunners shot 50 percent (26-of-52) from the field for the game and forced 26 turnovers.
UTSA will next host Sam Houston State on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.
