HOUSTON - UTSA junior Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) posted the men's first NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of the season, scoring 5,297 points for third place in the heptathlon at the Houston Indoor Invitational Saturday at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Buteaux held on to his third-place position after day one's first four events on Friday to finish third behind Texas' duo of Donovan Kilmartin (5,752) and Trey Hardee (5,633). He scored 2,393 points Saturday after a day-one total of 2,904. Buteaux also posted a provisional qualifier last season, a previous career-best 5,265 points at the Boise State Multis.
Junior teammate Bryan Wolfe (Raymondville, Texas) took sixth place with 4,917 points, a personal best.
Freshman Luke Johnson (Amarillo, Texas) measured 52-2 for fourth place in the men's shot put, while freshman Steven Brown (Mesquite, Texas) was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 22-8.
On the track Saturday, the men's distance medley relay took third overall and second among collegiate teams with a time of 10:36.00. Senior Curtis Johnson, junior Justin Pitchford and freshman Brian Weirich all posted fifth-place finishes in the 200m (22.17), mile (4:22.21) and 800m (1:57.42), respectively.
The Roadrunners return to Houston next Saturday, Feb. 5, when they compete in the Hyatt Regency Invitational.
