Crew tabbed SLC Preseason Player of the Year by Baseball America

SAN ANTONIO – The preseason honors keep piling up for University of Texas at San Antonio junior shortstop Ryan Crew. After being named first-team preseason all-Southland Conference, Crew has now been recognized as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year, according to Baseball America.

Crew, who will take on an expanded role on the mound this year in addition to manning his spot up the middle, returns after leading the Roadrunners in at-bats (245), hits (76), and total bases (121) in 2004, while ranking second on the team in runs (41), home runs (9) and RBI (37). His 76 hits ranked fifth on the UTSA single season hit chart, and he is poised to climb into the top 10 on several other career offensive charts this spring as well.

On the mound, Crew led the team with four saves and did not allow an earned run in six relief appearances. The coaching staff will look at Crew in a possible starter role this season.

He solidified his place as one of the Southland’s -- and the nation’s -- top prospects this summer when he was tabbed the no. 3 prospect in the New England Collegiate League.

Louisiana-Monroe hurler Matt Green was the publication’s pick for Pitcher of the Year.

The Roadrunners begin the 2005 season on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m., hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Wolff Stadium.
