Roadrunner women race past McNeese State, 67-49

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Freshman Richelle Parks scored a career high 28 points to lead the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team to a 67-49 win over McNeese State at the Lake Charles Civic Center Thursday night. Parks netted 12 points in the first half and added 16 in the final half as the Roadrunners improved to 8-7 and 2-2 in the Southland Conference. McNeese State fell to 3-13 and 2-3 in the league.
Parks was 11-for-14 from the floor as the Roadrunners were able to constantly break the full-court press of the Cowgirls. The Roadrunners built a 31-18 halftime lead and increased their lead to as much as 19 in the final half after a Parks’ free throw at 12:25 made the score 49-30. McNeese then went on an 11-0 run to trim the lead to just eight, at 49-41, with 8:27 left after a Regina Spivey three-pointer. But UTSA out-scored McNeese 15-6 over the next six minutes to run the margin back to 17, at 64-47, with 2:11 left.
In the first half, the Roadrunners raced out to a 16-6 lead at the 11:22 mark after a Parks’ free throw. McNeese State cut it to four, at 18-14, with 4:16 left in the initial half, but UTSA went on an 8-0 to build the lead back to 26-14 at the 1:31 mark.
UTSA shot 54 percent for the game (25-of-46) and out-rebounded McNeese State 34-28. Freshman Terrie Davis tied her career high with eight rebounds to lead UTSA. UTSA also had 16 assists and 10 steals, while holding McNeese State to just 36 percent from the field. Spivey led the Cowgirls with 11 points, while Valencia LeBlanc chipped in with 10.
UTSA returns to the Convocation Center on Saturday to face Northwestern State, a team that defeated the Roadrunners 54-49 on Jan. 8. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
