Crisostomo highlights solid UTSA performance at Houston Indoor Opener

HOUSTON – Freshman Jaziel Crisostomo (Austin, Texas/Westlake) won the men’s 5,000 meters to highlight 20 top-five finishes by the UTSA track and field teams Saturday at the Houston Indoor Opener.

Crisostomo clocked a 15:40.26 to win the 5,000m by eight seconds ahead of Sam Houston State’s Eugene Esselborn (15:48.87) for the only win of the afternoon by a Roadrunner. UTSA displayed depth in numerous events, though, piling up 20 top-fives, including 12 on the men’s side, in the non-scored season opener at Bill Yeoman Field House.

The distance races were a strongpoint as sophomore Larry Brooks (Stafford, Texas) and junior transfer Justin Pitchford (Hinton, Okla.) finished two-three in the 800m with times of 1:54.53 and 1:55.08, respectively. Freshman Michael Schwartz (Roanoke, Texas) took fifth among collegiate competitors and sixth overall in the 3,000m in 9:09.03, while junior transfer Dustin Riedel (Rio Medina, Texas) was fourth among collegians in the 5,000m in 16:44.34. UTSA fielded two distance medley relay teams, finishing third (10:47.94) and fourth (10:54.55).

UTSA also was strong in the distances on the women’s side as junior Ashley McDonald (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) and sophomore Karilyn Petty (Fredericksburg, Texas) finished third (18:53.92) and fourth (19:21.30), respectively, in the 5,000m. The distance medley relay squad took fifth in 13:00.05.

The Roadrunner jumpers performed well with three third-place finishes on the afternoon. Sophomore Morgan Moszee (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS) picked up the bronze in the women’s long (18-5 ľ) and triple (37-8 ˝) jumps. Freshman Steven Brown (Mesquite, Texas) leaped 23-4 for third in the men’s long jump. Freshman Ashley Allen (Buffalo Gap, Texas) placed fourth in the women’s triple jump (36-10 ˝).

A pair of senior sprinters also finished third as Curtis Johnson (Pampa, Texas) sped to a 22.26 clocking the men’s 200m, while Rosalind Holmes (Kerens, Texas) clocked a 24.54 in the women’s deuce.

Other top five finishers included junior All-American Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) taking fifth in the high jump (5-2 ˝), freshman Luke Johnson (Amarillo, Texas) and junior Robert Stager (Converse, Texas/Judson) placing fourth (51-10) and fifth (49-9 Ľ), respectively, in the men’s shot put and junior David Burnett (Corpus Christi, Texas) clocking 49.60 for fifth in the men’s 400m.

Both teams return to action next Saturday, Jan. 22, when the travel to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the Wes Kittley Five-Way.
