SAN ANTONIO - Senior center Anthony Fuqua set a new UTSA school record with seven blocked shots as the Roadrunners remained undefeated at home following a 79-69 victory over the Nicholls State Colonels on Friday night at the UTSA Convocation Center.
With their 10th straight home win, UTSA improved to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in Southland Conference (SLC) play.
Junior Ray Selvage led UTSA with a career-high 18 points that included five slam dunks. The Roadrunners had four players in double figures as John Millsap added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Rapheal Posey added 14, and Justin Harbert, 13.
Nicholls State, which fell to 5-10 and 0-4 in SLC play, was led by Willie Depron with 21 points, while Stefan Blaszcynski added 15.
"I was disappointed in our overall performance even though it was a win," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "I thought Anthony (Fuqua) and Ray (Selvage) both made a huge difference inside for us. It just took us too long to establish our inside game tonight."
Leading 34-31 at halftime, UTSA opened the second half with a 30-13 run and led 64-44 after a 3-point field goal by Harbert with 10:47 remaining.
Selvage had nine points in each half for UTSA as the Roadrunners dominated in the paint over the smaller Colonels.
Nicholls State, which hit 9 of 30 3-point field goals, could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
UTSA, which blocked 10 shots as a team, out-rebounded Nicholls State 49-48. The seven blocks by Fuqua broke the old school record of six established in 1996 by Tom Oswald, and matched by Fuqua last season..
The Roadrunners, who will play four games over the next eight days, will return to action this Monday, Jan. 17 with a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game at Texas-Pan American.
