SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA men’s and women’s track and field teams will open the 2005 season on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Houston Indoor Opener hosted by Houston at Bill Yeoman Field House.
Field events are scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m., followed by running events at 10:30. Complete meet information and results can be found on the official site for Houston athletics at uhcougars.collegesports.com. The Roadrunner women welcome back 17 letterwinners, headlined by All-American Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central HS). Dupree finished seventh in the heptathlon at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, to conclude a stellar sophomore campaign that saw her win heptathlon titles at both the Texas and Drake Relays. Dupree also won the indoor pentathlon crown at the Southland Conference Championships and finished 11th at the NCAA Indoor in March.
UTSA also returns half of the conference champion distance medley relay team in senior Chonna Wright (San Angelo, Texas/Lakeview HS) and junior Meghan Chance (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS, who also was the 2004 SLC Indoor Female Student-Athlete of the Year.
The UTSA men return 12 letterwinners, including a pair of conference champions in senior Curtis Johnson (Pampa, Texas/Pampa HS) and sophomore Larry Brooks (Stafford, Texas/Stafford HS). Johnson, an NCAA qualifier in the 200 meters in 2003, won the 100m and was runner-up in the 200m at the SLC Outdoor Championships last spring. Brooks, a junior All-American, took top honors in the 800m at the league meet as a true freshman.
Juniors Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill HS), the bronze medal winner in the decathlon at the 2004 SLC Outdoor, and NCAA Midwest Regional qualifiers Marques Mitchell (Converse, Texas/Judson HS) and T.R. Sissel (Junction, Texas/Junction HS), also make up part of a strong nucleus of experienced performers on the men’s squad.
