UTSA rallies for five-game victory at Louisiana-Monroe

MONROE, La. – Junior Meagan Daniel led five Roadrunners in double-digit kills as the UTSA volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to score a 30-24, 27-30, 22-30, 30-19, 15-12 victory at Louisiana-Monroe Saturday afternoon at Brown Gym.

With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 16-10 overall and 12-6 in the Southland Conference. The Lady Indians fall to 15-15 and 8-10. It was the 15th straight win for UTSA over ULM, which now leads the all-time series, 24-3.

Daniel had 22 kills, a .439 hitting percentage and 10 digs for her 15th double-double and 22nd double-digit kills outing of the year. Junior Brittany Hildebrand and Connie Picard and redshirt freshman Victoria Prior added 14 kills apiece, while senior Julia Hunter pitched in 12. Picard added a career-high eight blocks, including two solos, while junior Erin McMillan posted a team-high 20 digs. Freshman Rebecca Hrapmann came off the bench to provide a career-best 32 assists.

Brittany Winters led the Indians with 18 kills and Megan Gloor added 17. Sei Hee Hwang registered a match-high 27 digs and Darci Mika turned in 56 assists.

Staring at a 2-1 deficit in game four, UTSA put together a dominating performance from the opening serve en route to a 30-19 victory. The Roadrunners used a 12-4 run in building an 18-8 lead. ULM rallied to within five as late as 21-16 but UTSA held on and forced game five.

Both teams traded points in game five until the Roadrunners put together a 3-0 run for a 10-7 lead they would never relinquish. ULM fought off two consecutive game points to get within 14-12 on a pair of winners from Natkeisha Raibon, but the Roadrunners clinched the thrilling match on a Hunter kill, 15-12.

UTSA used a 7-0 run in fighting back from a 7-4 deficit for an 11-7 lead. The Indians hung close and were within two at 16-14, but the Roadrunners ran off 11 straight points for a commanding 27-14 advantage. ULM mounted a late rally to pull within five at 28-23 but a kills from Picard and Hildebrand ended the game, 30-24.

ULM fought back from a 23-20 deficit in game two with a 6-0 run for a 26-23 lead. The Roadrunners rallied to within two at 29-27 on a kill by Daniel, an Indian attack error and a solo block by Picard, but a winner by Raibon knotted the match at 1-1.

The Indians used a 9-1 run to break open a tight game three for a 24-15 lead. They held on from there for the 2-1 lead with the 30-22 victory.

The Roadrunners return to action in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament hosted by Texas-Arlington next Friday-Sunday, Nov. 18-20, at Texas Hall.
