Daniel, Strickland, Picard earn All-SLC accolades

PLANO, Texas - The UTSA junior trio of Meagan Daniel, DeeDee Strickland and Connie Picard was named to the All-Southland Conference volleyball team released by the league office Wednesday.

Daniel (pictured right), an outside hitter, was one of six players chosen to the first team, while Strickland and Picard were named to the second and third teams at setter and middle blocker, respectively.

It marked the third consecutive first team selection for Daniel, the 2003 SLC Freshman of the Year, and she is the only current league player with three first team honors. One of the top all-around players in the conference, Daniel finished the regular season with 447.5 points, 395 kills, 274 digs, 37 blocks, 34 service aces and 31 assists. In SLC play, she ranked first in kills (4.60 kills per game) and points (5.11 ppg) and also was 13th in hitting percentage (.280) and 14th in aces per game (0.33). Daniel currently ranks fifth on UTSA’s career kills chart with 1,364.

Strickland (left) was named to the second team for the first time in her career after posting 1,126 assists, 257 digs, 73.5 points, 51 kills and 25 blocks this season. A third team pick in 2003 and an honorable mention choice last year, Strickland led the league in SLC play with 12.95 assists per game and was second overall at 12.11 apg. An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI selection, she ranks second all-time at UTSA with 4,023 assists.

Picard (right) earned third team accolades for the first time, as well, after turning in 326.5 points, 251 kills, a .319 hitting percentage, 78 blocks, including 19 solos, 59 digs and 27 aces. An honorable mention selection last year and an All-SLC Tournament Team member in 2003, Picard ranked third in the league in hitting percentage while her SLC average of .349 was also third. She also was 11th in conference play with 4.28 points per game, 12th with 0.34 aces per game and 15th with 3.31 kills per game. Picard ranks second on UTSA’s career block assists chart with 238 and fifth on the total blocks list with 301.
