SAN ANTONIO - UTSA junior DeeDee Strickland has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Women’s Volleyball Third Team as voted upon by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
Strickland totes a 3.91 grade point average (GPA) in business and was one of two Southland Conference (SLC) student-athletes selected to the team as Melissa Marek of Texas-Arlington was voted to the first team. In order to qualify for academic all-district honors, a student-athlete must at least be a sophomore at his or her particular institution, be a starter or key reserve for his or her team and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or greater. District VI includes all institutions in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
On the court, Strickland, a setter, ranks second in the SLC in assists per game at 12.20 and averages 13.19 apg. in conference play. A two-time All-SLC selection, she has 1,049 assists this season, including a career-high 84 in a five-game victory over McNeese State on Oct. 28. The 84 assists was just four shy of the school record of 88 set by Natasha Biggers in 1998. Strickland also ranks second on UTSA’s career assists list with 3,946 and could threaten Biggers’ record of 5,440 next season.
