UTSA falls to 1-1 in conference with 71-66 loss at Northwestern State

Box Score

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to hand the UTSA men’s basketball team a 71-66 defeat at Prather Coliseum Saturday afternoon.

UTSA, which dropped to 6-6 and 1-1 in the Southland Conference, was led by Rapheal Posey with 14 points. Justin Harbert tallied 12 points, while Anthony Fuqua and John Millsap rounded out four players in double figures with 11 points each.

Jermaine Spencer led NSU, which improved to 8-8 and 2-0, with 10 points.

After not shooting a single free throw in the first half, NSU connected on 19 of 22 in the second half. For only the second time all season, UTSA was out-rebounded by opponent as the Demons prevailed 40-38. NSU had 22 offensive rebounds.

“It was a story of too many free throws in the second half for them,” said UTSA coach Tim Carter. “We didn’t do a good job of blocking them out either, and that was a big difference in the game.”

Leading 47-39 with 14:22 left to play after a David President basket, NSU outscored UTSA 18-10 over the next 8:15 to knot the game at 57 with 6:15 remaining in the game.

After UTSA took a 61-57 lead on a Millsap dunk with 4:56 to play, the Demons went on a 12-2 run and led 69-63 on two free throws by Tyronn Mitchell with 21 seconds left.

Harbert connected on a 3-point field goal with 12 seconds remaining to make it 69-66, before Tramaine Hancock closed the scoring with two more free throws with nine seconds to play.

UTSA returns to action on Friday, Jan. 14, hosting Nicholls State in a game that tips off at 8 p.m.
