SAN ANTONIO – Senior Julia Hunter recorded 15 kills and 11 digs to help lead the UTSA volleyball team to a 29-31, 30-23, 30-23, 30-26 win against Northern Colorado Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Roadrunners extend their home-court winning streak to 10 matches and improve to 14-8 on the season. The Bears, a first-year NCAA Division I Independent program, fall to 11-11 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Hunter had a team-best 17.5 points and turned in her first double-double of the season to help lead UTSA to a .216-.116 advantage in the hitting column. Redshirt freshman Victoria Prior also reached double digits with 11 kills, while senior Rachel Tilson added nine. Junior DeeDee Strickland also posted a double-double, her third of the weekend and 11th of the season, with 52 assists and a team-high 20 digs.
Defensively, senior Jennifer Emelogu recorded a career-high eight block assists in helping UTSA post 11 team blocks for the match. Tilson added four blocks, while junior Erin McMillan pitched in with 15 digs.
Meredith Alder led Northern Colorado with 15 kills and seven block assists, while Amanda Wiggins turned in 12 kills and 17 digs.
The Bears rallied from a 27-24 deficit in game one to knot the score at 28-all on a kill by Dani Veal. A kill by junior Meagan Daniel negated UNC’s first game point, but the Bears came through for the 31-29 victory on a kill by Lizzy Rhoads.
UTSA took advantage of seven UNC service errors in game two and used a 5-0 run to break open a tight game at 25-23 for the 30-23 win. Game three was also a 30-23 decision in UTSA’s favor as Tilson posted five of her nine kills in the frame. The Roadrunners went on an 8-3 run to break an 11-11 tie. UNC rallied to within two at 23-21 but a service error and a Tilson winner helped UTSA end the threat with a 7-2 run.
Game four was controlled by the Roadrunners. Although the Bears kept it close with eight ties, their only lead was 1-0 as UTSA cruised home to the 30-26 victory.
UTSA stays home to host the top two teams in the Southland Conference next weekend at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners will test their 10-match home winning streak against league leader Stephen F. Austin on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m., and then battle second-place Sam Houston State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
