ARLINGTON, Texas – Juniors Connie Picard and Meagan Daniel reached double-digit kills but Ashley Van Antwerp registered a match-high 15 to lead the Texas-Arlington volleyball team to a 22-30, 30-23, 30-19, 30-18 victory over UTSA Friday night at Texas Hall.
The loss snaps the Roadrunners’ season-best seven-match winning streak as they fall to 11-7 overall and 8-3 in the Southland Conference. The Mavericks improve to 4-14 and 2-7.
Picard turned in 13 kills and three blocks and hit .414 for the match, while Daniel posted her ninth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 17 digs. Junior DeeDee Strickland had a match-best 41 assists and junior Erin McMillan led all players with 23 digs, but UTA out hit the Roadrunners, .204-.092, and recorded 15 team blocks in the victory.
UTSA overcame a 4-1 start by UTA in game one, breaking open a tight battle at 15-all with a 5-0 run that gave the Roadrunners a 20-15 lead. The Mavericks fought back to within four late at 26-22, but an attack error and two kills and a block from Picard gave UTSA the 30-22 win.
The Mavericks built an 11-6 lead to start game two, only to have the Roadrunners battle back to within one at 11-10 on a kill by Hildebrand. UTA again edged out to a comfortable lead at 20-15, but UTSA rallied to within two at 21-19. That would be as close as UTSA would get as UTA cruised home to the 30-23 winner, tying the match at 1-1.
UTSA grabbed the early momentum in game three, jumping out to a 7-3 lead out of the gates. UTA rallied to tie it at 7-all and eventually used an 11-4 run for an 18-11 advantage. The Roadrunners cut the deficit to six at 21-15 but the Mavs, who out hit the Roadrunners, .222-minus .054 in the game, staved off any further threat, taking the 2-1 lead with a 30-19 win.
It was all UTA in game four. The Mavs broke open a tight game at 9-7 with an 11-1 run for a 20-8 lead, cruising home from there for the 30-18 win.
The Roadrunners travel to Huntsville for a conference match at Sam Houston State on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
