HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Alisha Fowler led four Bearkats in double-figure kills with 18 as the Sam Houston State volleyball team scored a 30-26, 31-29, 30-23 sweep of UTSA Tuesday night at Johnson Coliseum.
With the loss, the Roadrunners fall to 11-8 overall and 8-4 in the Southland Conference. The Bearkats improve to 13-9 and 11-2.
Junior Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) led UTSA with 13 kills, while senior Julia Hunter (Peoria, Ariz.) and junior Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas) added 10 apiece. Junior Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) had eight kills and a team-high five blocks and juniors Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) and DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas) chipped in with 21 digs and 40 assists, respectively.
Fowler had 18 kills and 10 blocks to lead Sam Houston’s attack as Cynthia Yarotsky added 12 kills and Chrissy Engle and Rhae Walderman pitched in with 11 apiece.
Sam Houston fought back from a 12-9 deficit in game one with a 4-1 run that knotted the score at 13-all. The Bearkats then took their first lead at 19-18 and held on for the 30-26 win.
UTSA broke open a close game two at 21-21 with an 8-4 run for a 29-25 lead. Sam Houston mounted a furious comeback, negating four game points to tie it at 29-all and eventually pulling out a 31-29 win for the 2-0 lead.
Sam Houston too a 16-12 lead midway through game three and cruised home for the 30-23 win, handing UTSA just its third three-game loss of the season.
The Roadrunners return to the Convocation Center for the first of five straight home matches this Friday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m. against McNeese State.
