SAN ANTONIO - Coming off a surprising 3-1 loss at Texas-Arlington on Friday that snapped a seven-match winning streak, the UTSA volleyball team travels to Huntsville for a Southland Conference contest at Sam Houston State. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
The Roadrunners enter the match at 11-7 overall and in fourth place in the league at 8-3. The Bearkats are 12-9 overall and in sole possession of second place at 10-2, trailing undefeated Stephen F. Austin (12-0).
UTSA comes into the match with a potent offensive attack that is out-hitting its opponents, .212-.172, with a league-leading 15.56 kills per game. Junior Meagan Daniel has a team-high 247 kills (3.98 kills per game), 21 service aces, 28 blocks and 170 digs (2.74 dpg). Juniors Connie Picard and Brittany Hildebrand and senior Jennifer Emelogu all have surpassed the 100-kill mark with 173, 161 and 110, respectively.
Picard leads the team in blocks with 58 (1.04 bpg) and hitting percentage (SLC-best .340), while junior Erin McMillan has a team-best 281 digs (4.76 dpg) and 21 aces. Junior DeeDee Strickland ranks second in the SLC in assists with 11.48 per game (712 assists) and has chipped in with 170 digs (2.74 dpg).
Sam Houston State is led offensively by Alisha Fowler, Cynthia Yarotsky and Chrissy Engle, who are averaging 3.47, 3.14 and 3.03 kills per game, respectively. Fowler also ranks second in the SLC in blocks per game with 86 (1.15 bpg), while Megan McNamara is sixth in the league with 10.35 assists per game and Jennifer Henrichsen has 359 digs (4.79 dpg).
The Bearkats are one of the better serving teams in the region with 2.28 per game, led by Engle (40 aces), Yarotsky (35) and Rhae Walderman (30). Head coach Brenda Gray is 482-312 in 21 seasons at the helm. |
