THIBODAUX, La. – The UTSA volleyball extended its win streak to six Friday night, getting double-digit kills from junior Meagan Daniel and redshirt freshman Victoria Prior (right) in a 30-16, 30-25, 30-16 victory over Nicholls State at Thibodaux High School.
The Roadrunners improve to 10-6 overall and remain in at least a tie for third place at 7-2 in the Southland Conference. The Lady Colonels fall to 0-9 and 0-8. UTSA now has won seven of its last eight matches with this being the first conference road victory of the season. With the sweep, the Roadrunners now have won 18-of-19 games in the six-match stretch, dropping their only game in a 3-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 8.
Daniel turned in a match-high 14 kills, her 13th double-figure outing of the season, passing Cristela Perez for sixth place on UTSA’s career kills chart (1,178). Prior recorded 11 kills and hit .643 in her second start of the week for the injured Jennifer Emelogu, matching her career high set in Tuesday night’s victory against Texas State.
The duo led a UTSA offense that hit .327 for the match, compared to .020 by Nicholls. Junior Connie Picard added nine kills and a team-best three blocks, while junior Erin McMillan turned in a match-high 13 digs. Junior DeeDee Strickland posted 22 assists, while freshman Rebecca Hrapmann, playing near her hometown of New Orleans, contributed a career-high 13 assists.
Atina Porter and Enjoli Ford led the Colonels with six kills apiece.
UTSA out hit Nicholls, .400-.031, in a 30-16, game-one victory. The Roadrunners never trailed and broke open a tight game at 15-12 with a 7-0 run to make it 19-12 on a kill by Picard. The Roadrunners rolled behind five combined kills from Picard and Prior, ending the game on a 15-4 run.
Nicholls kept it close in game two, eventually taking its only lead of the match at 12-11 on a dump by Cassey Stacey. UTSA answered, tying the game on a solo block by Prior and taking a 15-13 lead after three kills from Daniel in the run. The Colonels would keep it close until a 9-4 run forced a Nicholls timeout at 26-19. The Colonels mounted a rally out of the timeout, cutting the deficit to three at 28-25 on an ace by Stacey. UTSA quickly ended the game at 30-25 on a block from Picard and senior Rachel Tilson and an attack error on Nicholls.
It was all Roadrunners to open game three as they built a 14-2 lead out of the gates behind a strong outside attack from Daniel. Nicholls would get no closer than eight (21-13) the rest of the way as UTSA cruised home to end the match in three, 30-16.
UTSA now leads the all-time series with Nicholls, 18-9, sweeping the season series this year.
The Roadrunners play at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 4 p.m.
