SMU runs past Roadrunners, 66-46

DENVER, Colo. – Southern Methodist used a 12-0 run to end the first half and then increased the margin to as much as 21 in the second half in handing the University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team a 66-46 defeat in the opening round of the University of Denver/Wells Fargo Classic Saturday at the Magness Arena.

UTSA fell to 3-5 on the year and will face Tennessee-Martin tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the consolation game. SMU improved to 7-1.

UTSA used a 10-4 scoring flurry in the first half to take a 14-9 lead with 13:02 left in the half after a trey by senior Kim Reed. The Roadrunners increased the lead to 18-11 with 10:48 remaining and led by seven on three other occasions in the first half, including 24-17 at the 4:59 mark. However, SMU constructed a 12-0 run to end the first period leading 29-24.

The Roadrunners trimmed the SMU lead to three, at 31-28, with 16:59 left in the game after a free throw from freshman Richelle Parks, but SMU pushed the margin back to nine, at 39-30, with 13:13 left in the game after a jumper by Shonte Roberts. The Roadrunners again sliced the margin back to four, at 39 35, with 9:58 remaining but then saw SMU outscore them 23-5 over the next eight minutes to trail 61-40 with 1:29 left in the game.

UTSA, which was led by Parks’ career high 16 points and eight rebounds, managed to shoot just 26 percent (18-of-68) or the game, including 23 percent (8-of-34) in the final half. The Roadrunners held SMU to just 37 percent (26-of-69) shooting for the game but were out-rebounded by the Mustangs 55-44. UTSA Junior Katie Sandefur chipped in nine points and eight rebounds. SMU was led by Janielle Dodds with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sarah Davis had 12 points and 11 boards.
